My children continue to amaze me everyday with the beautiful lessons they reflect back to me. Just the other day I was about to make lunch for my three year old son, and as always the first thing he did was pull up his little chair so he can stand beside me. I had already put some butter on his bread and had the box of chocolate sprinkles in my hand, ready to apply the finishing touch!
"I want to do it!" he cried out with determination, and pulled the box out of my hand.
I told him that I was going to do it, because the last time he tried half the content of the box came pouring out. However my little boy was so persistent, that I gave in and let him try again. I watched him in silence just waiting for the same thing to happen as the time before.
So what do you think happened? Nothing I expected of course...
He did it perfectly. Tapping a little bit of chocolate sprinkles onto his bread with great care and focus, my gorgeous boy then looked up at me with a satisfied smile, "See mom? I did it".
This small incident turned out to be a big reminder for me. It reminded me that you can't learn and grow if you stop trying or stop getting the opportunity to try.
It's also very unhelpful to try something again and still have the result of your last experience imprinted in your mind. Just because something didn't go as planned or as you hoped the last time, that doesn't mean you will experience that same result this time. If we are indeed going to learn, grow and upgrade, we have to give ourselves and each other a chance to continuously start again with a clean slate.
Many people talk about "second chances", but the way I see it we are presented with "multiple chances" in life. The point is to keep learning from our experiences, and when we have the desire to learn because it brings us joy, we will always be able to fuel that desire. Whatever it is you are intending on achieving, however big or really small it may seem, just know that this time will be different.
We know what Einstein said about it being insane to keep repeating the same thing, expecting a different result right? That doesn't mean stop trying, it just means keep adjusting your approach or tactics and try something different.
I would also would have liked to tell you to "NEVER give up"... but the thing is, I believe that if something feels horrible, makes you unhappy, or you are forcing something even though it doesn't feel right, you probably should give up.
Just remember that when it comes to something that makes you HAPPY, and you believe that you CAN do it, don't let anyone talk you out of it just because you haven't been able to do it before. We are capable of creating wonderful things beyond our wildest imagination.
